Chinese Folk Dance

  • General Introduction

  • Chinese folk dance, created and went round in Chinese folk, is restricted by folk customs and it is a dance form taken diverting-oneself as its main function. Due to the differences among survival environment, customs, habits, life styles, ethnic characteristics, cultural traditions and religious beliefs different ethnic groups had formed obviously different dance styles and performance skills. Chinese folk dance is featured with various forms, abundant content, vivid images and thus the classic, royal and professional dance of different times had taken it as necessary original material sources.
       Chinese folk dance is linked closely with real life and reflects the life struggle, ideology, aesthetic taste and so on of common people directly. One of the most typical examples is skillful use of props, such as fan, handkerchief, long silk, tambourine, colored stick, colored umbrella, colored lantern, which strengthens the art performing ability of dance. On the other hand, the combination of songs and dances promotes the full expression of daily life and easily understanding.

  • Peacock Dance

  • Peacock dance is the most typical folk dance of Dai ethnic group. The content of peacock dance is mainly imitate the peacock’s Actions of running down hill, strolling in forest, drinking and paddling, spreading the wings, quivering the swings,

    volitation and spreading the tail. The dance appearance is of variety and the dance posture is like a sculpture. Postures of dancer may mainly keep evenly fluttering when in a half-squatting position. Every joint in body and arms is bending to form the unique pose of Three Bending. Hand actions are also various and delicate to express different aesthetic feelings and artistic conceptions.

    Due to the climate and natural conditions, there are many peacocks in the area of Dai ethnic group and the inhabitants there had formed the habit of feeding peacocks in early times. They consider peacocks as the symbol of beauty, goodness, wisdom and auspiciousness.

    The classic peacock dance, called Soul of Peacock, directed and performed by famous dancer Yang Liping. It is not only the traditional imitation of the actions of peacocks, but the deeply understanding of the relationship of human and peacocks as well as the combination the soul of peacocks.
